Description

This trail presents a remarkable enhancement of the local biodiversity and landscapes, enhancing and comprising the village communities of Aveleda, Varge and Rio de Onor – villages that is one of seven wonders of Portugal.

Located at the heart of the protected area of the Montesinho Natural Park, this walking trail focuses on the mountain meadows and old windmills situated by the banks of the Aveleda Stream which are identity elements of the landscape and production practices of the villages of Aveleda, Varge, Rio de Onor, favouring the direct contact with nature and the vernacular heritage of the north-eastern border.

This trail presents a remarkable enhancement of the local biodiversity and landscapes, enhancing and comprising the village communities of Aveleda, Varge and Rio de Onor – villages which keep a strong cultural identity as well as steady traditional community practices.

Rio de Onor is also known for its community character as sharing and mutual help are key to its inhabitants. It is worth mentioning the sharing of windmills and community ovens as well as the mutual help when it comes to farming tasks in the surrounding arable land and herding. In the village there is also a community forge. The infractions of the community rules were registered in the “vara da justiça” (justice rod) and sanctioned with fines payable in wine. In 2017, Rio de Onor was voted as one of the “7 Wonders” of Portugal, in the category of villages located in protected areas.
