The route begins near the Pinhão railway station, built in the 19th century and regarded as one of the most beautiful stations of the country.

On the slopes bordering the Pinhão river and the Douro River, between Pinhão and Casal de Loivos, you will find, harmoniously embedded in the landscape, many of the historic Douro farms and the main Port wine production houses.

There is a deviation in Casal de Loivos to its viewpoint, allowing you to appreciate what was considered by an English newspaper as the third most beautiful landscape in the world.

Day 5: Walking at “Trilho Vinhateiro de Provesende”
Distance: 6,4 Km | 4 mi
Duration: 3h30min
Difficulty of Walk: Easy
This trail starts from Provesende, one of the six wine villages in the Douro region.

The trail passes near the Torguiano viewpoint of São Cristóvão do Douro and goes down to the mouth of the river Pinhão through paths between terraces which shapes a vineyard landscape classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.

At the end of the trail “abre-se a boca de espanto…, e fica-se maravilhado...” (the mouth opens in astonishment, and one is overwhelmed…) (Miguel Torga, in “Portugal, Doiro”), with the unique view that stretches ahead, having reached the Douro river and mouth of the river Pinhão and one of the main shipping docks of splendid wines produced in the region.

Day 6: Walking at “Trilho de Favaios – Alijó”
Distance: 10,5 Km | 6,5 mi
Duration: 3h50min
Difficulty of Walk: Easy
This is a circular trail which starts and ends in Favaios, one of the 5 villages in the Douro Demarcated Region that is officially known as “Aldeia Vinhateira” (wine growing traditional village).
The trail goes towards Alijó passing through Castelo de Vilarelho, a fortified settlement where the first inhabitants of the region lived during the Iron Age.
Make sure you make the most of your visit to Favaios, do not miss its rich historical and cultural heritage.

Day 7: Walking at “Trilho de Castedo – Cotas”
Distance: 7,3 Km | 4,5 mi
Duration: 2h40min
Difficulty of Walk: Easy
This trail goes towards Cotas following the demarcation of the Alto Douro Wine Region, listed by UNESCO as a world heritage living and evolving cultural landscape.
The vineyard, destined almost exclusively for the production of Port wine, bears witness to an agricultural activity carried out on terraces, which were carved out on the steep and wild slopes of the Douro River valley.
This trail is, therefore, a wine trail of excellence where several “mortórios” can still be found – primitive vineyard terraces whose cultivation was abandoned at the end of the 19th century.
The natural and cultural landscape of this walking trail is also punctuated by humble chapels, scattered all around the highest spots in this landscape.
